# Create a new data type

A *data type* defines the type of data to be stored and is the basis of Pipes robots. If a suitable data type doesn’t exist for your project, follow the steps below to create anew data type. 

On the **Projects** screen:

2. Select **Create new data type.**
3. Name the data type.
4. Click **Add field**.
5. Name your field.
6. Select the checkbox in the **Key** column if the data type should be treated as a key for results references and sorting.
7. Select an option from the **Type** drop-down. For a Pipes robot, select **File**.
8. Add a value in the **Default Value** field if the data type should include a default value.
10. Click **Save**.
